The Host City- KuchingKuching is the capital of Sarawak state which situated in East Malaysia, it is the largest city in the East Malaysia as well as in Borneo, and it is ranked as the fourth largest city in Malaysia. The transliteration of Kuching has the same pronunciation with the Malay word ‘Kucing’ which refers to cat, hence, Kuching is also known as “Cat city”.
There are a lot of different stories on the origin of the name of Kuching. In Malay, Kuching means “cat”, but Kuching does not has any relation with it. Kuching probably originated from the Chinese word “Gu Chin’ which refers to port; however there is another statement which argue that Kuching is named after a litchee fruit which call “Mata Kuching” (cat’s eyes). Kuching was official named in August 1872 and it has become a city in 1st August 1988. Kuching is a trade centre with long history, there is a variety of foreigners move to live here between these few centuries. Malays, Chinese, Indians, Europeans and others have lived together with the indigenous people and create a city which rich with unique cultural heritage. Sarawak was a typical Malay country and it is under the control of Sultan of Brunei before nineteenth century. However, there are a lot of Sarawakians were forced to pay high taxes and the local officers always be fired without any reason, has resulted the rise of demonstrations and explosive actions towards the Brunei Empire. Hence, the Sultan of Brunei has hired an English adventurer, James Brooke to prevent this explosive action. James Brooke is also the first White Rajah in Sarawak. The Sultan of Brunei has designated James Brooke with the position as the Sarawak governor as a reward. At last, the Sultan of Brunei was forced to sign an agreement with James Brooke whereby Sarawak will be fully handed over to him. Since then, James Brooke has turned Sarawak as a key management centre and also the starting point with the role to consolidate the ports. His successor, Charles Brooke (1868-1917) was greatly related with many historical buildings and Riverside Park in Sarawak. However, during the broke out of Second War World, the invasion of Japan has caused the collapse of Brooke dynasty. In 1945, the Japanese has surrendered and Sarawak was placed under the authority of Australian military until Vyner Brooke comes back. However, the third White Rajah was ceded Sarawak to the British Government. Sarawak has become British colony in 1st July 1946. Sarawak and Sabah had gained independence in 16th September 1963 and joined with another 11 countries in Peninsular Malaya to form the federation of Malaysia.
